Marilyn Miller Certified Farmers Market | Tuesday morning, Redding

Melanie Wong | Jan 6, 202009:41 AM

Such a sweet midweek market . . couldn't leave Redding without shopping at one of the certified farmers markets. They'd been shut down for more than a week during the Carr Fire (August 2018) and everyone was itching to get back to business.

Ten vendors, good variety, local producers. I learned why the local peaches are so wonderful: tree ripened Faye Elbertas, one of the very best varieties is what's commonly grown here. I bought fresh produce to take home from 9 of them (skipped the apron booth). My favorite watermelons from a truck in San Francisco are seeded and come from Red Bluff terroir so I'm happy to purchase straight from the source. Tomatoes and melons are near bursting ripe. Biodynamically farmed summer squash including phallic Tommasino variety.

Mrs Mua's beefy tomatoes were so gorgeous, and she clucked approvingly, "You're one of those smart shoppers, walk around to see everything before you buy." Pastured eggs from Happy Valley, extra large, $5 doz. Tom's Sharlyn melon, $3, so ripe and fragrant, it had to be eaten that night with my housemates. Thistle honey from Minger's, a beekeeper who does not artificially supplement. For the Love of Pie, a cottage producer, fresh peach pie and strawberry-rhubarb pie. I was thrilled to chat with her and learn of her success, as I had advocated for the state legislation that has let small homebased food businesses like hers bloom. R&K peaches and nectarines.

The cornucopia overflowed. So happy I could catch this one as I just knew the tomatoes and melons would be fantastic in this climate.
