Mandatory municipal composting: how do you handle your food scraps?

babette feasts | Jan 4, 201501:03 PM

Here in Seattle, we are no longer supposed to put food scraps in the garbage, rather they must all go in the yard waste/compost bin. Great in theory, but in practice I find it a pain and need to find a better routine.

I do have a small can and compostable liner bags, but the can takes up valuable counter space, and if the bags stay damp for more than a few days they disintegrate. Even with the bag, the can gets damp and nasty inside from condensation. Seems like a waste to toss the bag when it is far from full, and using the can without a bag is even grosser. Is there a way to not have to take food scraps out to the compost bin on a daily basis without also having a bucket of nastiness on the kitchen counter?
