Main Street in Bay Shore, NY

Paul Trapani | Oct 31, 2003 01:01 AM

There's a lot going on in Bay Shore right now. On Main Street it seems that every other place is being taken over by new owners. Considering the sorry state some of these places have been in, this is a good thing. Here's a rundown of some of these new places, and some of my other favorites on Main Street. Naturally, if anybody knows any good places I missed, please chime in.

Five Star Restaurant
70 East Main Street
Bay Shore, NY 11706
631-665-3417

Though the name and the look of the sign will lead you to think this is a bad Chinese restaurant, it’s not. It’s a Honduran restaurant that also serves Peruvian, Mexican and Ecuadorian food. I tried some great Honduran chicken tacos. They were crispy tacos topped with mounds lettuce, tomato, onion and cheese.

Angie’s Kitchen Restaurant

I haven’t tried this, yet, but it looks good. This luncheonette, formerly known as the Bay Shore Palace diner, has new owners. While remnants of the old menu remain, the place has a definite Central American vibe to it. Good looking things on the menu were roast pork, empanadas and barbecued ribs.

Smokin’ Als
19 West Main St.
Bay Shore, NY
631-206-3000

This one hasn’t even opened, yet and I’m already excited. It’s a southern BBQ place. I won’t venture to guess at this point how authentic or good this place will be. I did look inside today and I liked what I saw. Two big smokers were sitting in the back waiting to be fired up.

Galloping Greens Market
41 East Main St.
Bay Shore, NY 11706
631-206-0875

This is a small organic/health food store. The produce looked decent and they have a vegetarian deli in the back with prepared food. I haven’t tried any of the prepared foods, yet. This reason I’m listing this place is that they carry eggs from Makinajian Poultry Farm (276 Cuba Hill Rd, Elwood). While it’s probably better to get the eggs right from the source, this is a convenient spot to get your eggs mid-week if you live on the South Shore.

Our Daly Bread
184 W Main St,Bay Shore,NY 11706
Phone: (631) 666-0800

All the breads are great. My current infatuation is the onion rye. It’s really dense rye bread studded with onions. It’s goes great with cheese or hummus. Cranberry orange muffins make a great breakfast (or snack). They also make great quiche, available by the slice, half-quiche or whole-quiche.

Bagel Cafe
134 W Main St
Bay Shore, NY 11706

I've been getting my bagels here because they're hand-rolled. I dig their olive cream cheese, too.
