It's amazing to see so many bakeries springing up that imitate the model of Magnolia Bakery: retro cakes (and cupcakes, cookies, etc) baked with the flair once reserved for fancier products, served in an unpretentious-but-hip atmosphere. Some of them make stuff as good or better than Magnolia, so I'm not dissing them for following this (very successful) formula.
Let's see...there's Polka Dot Cake Studio (312 Bleecker at Grove, Manhattan, NY; 212-645-0500), with particularly good bread pudding,
Mary's off Jane(34 Eighth Ave, just south of Jane St
Manhattan, NY; 212-243-5972), renowned for muffins and other things. I've seen other places...so many that they're blurring in my minds.
Anyone want to help compile the definitive list of hip ironic retro bakeries in lower Manhattan? if so, chip in your suggestions (with recommended items to get there).
I haven't been to Sticky Fingers in a LONG time (since before they moved); I used to love their cheesecake. Do they fit this mold?
