Macaroons - minus the almonds?

I have already made a batch of classic macaroons (ground almonds) along with 7 other types of cookies, but I have a pound of chopped walnuts leftover.

Has anyone tried substituting ground walnuts for ground almonds? Would it be similar enough, or is the stronger flavor of the walnuts going to adversely affect the cookie. I really liked the macaroons (and I have already made 2 batches of Mexican Wedding Cakes/Russian Tea Cakes and have no desire to make a third) but would really like to use up the walnuts.
