ma-la fried tofu question

in a recent times review asimov chickened out on trying ma-la fried tofu at SPICY & TASTY, a schezhuan place in queens. he stated that it's fermented tofu and known to be slimey and foul smelling, but said to be a delicacy in taiwan. anyone have any experience trying this dish? what's it like?
