Lucky Dogs (fka What’s Up Dog) in San Francisco

Melanie Wong | Jan 18, 201112:15 PM

Lucky Dogs, formerly a What’s Up Dog franchisee, has gone independent, operated by the same friendly owners. The favorites from the previous menu have been held over (e.g., Empire dog with Sabrett’s red onion sauce) along with some new twists such as a grass-fed beef organic hot dog, the K dog topped with Korean kimchi, or the Tokyo teaser dog sporting Japanese mayo, teriyaki sauce and seaweed.

For my first outing I went far more conservative, ordering the bratwurst, shown here unadorned before I added condiments from the self-serve station. Then I took a seat at a sidewalk table to have my lunch outside.

The bun reminds me of Berkeley’s Top Dog, but less toasty from the grill. Likewise, the brat was fine but didn’t have much grill influence. I’ll ask ‘em to sear it for me when I have more time.
