On Friday last week I had an absolutely fabulous tasting menu at Spendido. I had not been there for about 10 years, and wasn't sure what to expect but I was really blown away by the excellent service and unbelievable food.
My favourite was the first course - a cleanly opened eggshell filled with scrambled egg and creme fraiche, topped with caviar, brioche on the side, and a perfect morsel of cured salmon.
Highlights were a duck 'pastrami' which was sliced duck breast with a gorgeous prune based sauce, and a very rare squab which was served two ways - a stuffed frenched leg (how'd they do that??) and breast. Also, the main of roasted suckling pig with crackling was absolutely melt-in-your-mouth. A waiter kept arriving with fresh, warm breads that were fabulous. There was this molasses bread... I can't wait to try that again. Fleur de sel on the table.
The meal was very protein heavy with very little veg. We had the wine pairings as well which was a selection from South Africa.
In all, we had 10 courses if you include the amuse bouche (ceviche) sorbet (compliments of the chef) and an extra cheese course we had for fun. They have a great selection of raw milk cheeses and the sheep's milk brie (Quebec) was to die for. The Morbier was very interesting and had a prominent line of ash running through it.
It is rare that I get the chance to enjoy a meal of this calibre and I really can't say enough about the service and food quality.
Dinner for 4 with 3 wine pairings, 4 food tastings, and a cheese course came to $690.
Great venue for a special occasion or romantic meal.
