The Life and Times of the Buttered Roll

Dear NYC CH friends,

Although I lurk on these boards nearly every day, today I'm writing with a general inquiry for a piece I'm writing. Specifically, on the Buttered Roll. It (by which I mean the standard-issue Kaiser-with-butter) elicits blank looks from almost all non-native New Yorkers, but has anyone seen it outside the city? I've heard of NJ sightings. (Obviously you can get a roll with butter just about anywhere in America, but I'm referring specifically to the often ready-prepared Buttered Roll that answers to the name Buttered Roll and is available at most any NYC coffee cart or bodega.)

I'm also wondering when they became such a "thing" - does anyone remember eating them pre-60s? Vendors say their BR sales are on the decline but a Buttered Roll and Coffee Regular is still a cheap, quick staple for a lot of us, and I love them. If anyone has any thoughts, feelings, or knowledge of the Buttered Roll, I'd love to hear!
