As the afternoon heated up, I ducked into Legends Books, Antiques & Old Fashioned Soda Fountain in Sonora's historic downtown to cool off.
Formerly the Bank of Italy building, the front of the store is dominated by an impressive bar that serves as the soda fountain counter.
The bar's brass rail has these detailed castings. Lion or gargoyle?
The soda fountain features Blue Bunny ice cream imported from Iowa. My sarsaparilla root beer float was presented with a vintage silver plated spoon and pretty chaser glass.
The sarsaparilla soda is made by Columbia Soda Works in the neighboring town. It's fairly mild in spice level and carbonation. Still, I enjoyed being able to try a local product in a historic site.
