My husband has just annointed Le Virtu the best Italian restaurant in Philadelphia.
We're not counting Vetri, which is in a different category - special occasion, high priced.

We had a wonderful dinner at Le Virtu last night. I find it hard to resist the antipasto for two; it is full of unusual treats. I let my husband finish up the meats and cheeses, but I claim my share of the artichoke, the bruschettas, the delicious and unidentifiable extras.

Our friends had the fried, stuffed olives and the rice balls - I forget the name. Loved everything!

No regular bread at Le Virtu - it is fried bread, and you could make a meal of it.

The pastas are outstanding. One of my favorites is the tagliatelle with lemon and prosciutto - it is incredible! It was a special last night, but it will be on the menu for spring and summer. I had requested it during the winter, but it's a seasonal special.

My husband and one of our friends had another special, an unusual lasagne. Very rich, melt-in-the mouth, and marvelous. Another friend had the duck breast, which I wouldn't have thought to order. He orders that frequently at restaurants, and claimed this as the best.

We shared one dessert: a tiramisu special made with limoncello. I am not a tiramisu lover, but this was delightful.

Although the restaurant was crowded, we could hear each other talk. This is probably due to the fact that it is split into two rooms. The garden area looked lovely; we will try it when it gets a little warmer.

We have been here several times before, and like the variety of choices on the menu.
Although we won't give up on our old favorites, Le Virtu has climbed to the top of the list.
