Thanks to the guy who bought the great tray of middle eastern pastries to the chowhound social a few weeks ago we finally made it to the bakery.
They only opened a about 6 weeks ago and folks they have some amazing pastries and cookies - very fresh, very delicious and very reasonably priced. They deserve some support because they will need it to stay in business where being very good is not always good enough.
We sampled alot of interesting stuff as well as bite sized baklava made with pistachios and homemade filo. I'm not a big fan of baklava - too sweet for my palate, but I did enjoy the pastry and left the syrupy stuff for my other half.
My favorites were the pistachio stuffed buttery dome shaped cookie, the sesame crispy cookie and the pinenut snail (which melted in my mouth). And the guy behind the counter Rafi (who says it's a family business) couldn't be nicer. Actually we were going to go to Ali's to pick up some baba and falafel sandwiches but didn't realize they are closed on Mondays. Saw Moustafa sitting outside another place and stopped to chat with him. Seems that Ali will be closing for vacation soon - so maybe call ahead. We ended up with so so falafel and sharwma nearby. The consolation prize was the cookies and pastries we had brought to take home (well half the tray made it home..)
Saturday I actually went to DiFara's twice. Stopped off for a couple of slices on the way home from the Rockaway - had to wait until it came out of the oven and then regretted only taking 2 slices.
Came back later after a second run to the beach with another set of people(the idea of stopping at DiFaro's for dinner colored our choice of which beach to go to - we were considering Long Beach and then a stop at Bigelows or Itgen's but due to Van Wyck traffic decided to head to the Rockaways again.
I remember reading somewhere that if the ponytailed son is cooking that the food might not be as great as usual. Unfortunately that was our experience. The spaghetti with clam sauce was good but not the spectacular dish that the daughter or other son has made in the past. Lighter on the roasted garlic and no fresh clams in the shell this time - still enjoyable tho. The eggplant parm was bitter - don't know if you can blame that on the cook entirely. On the positive side the chix parm hero was so delicious and tender. ANd of course the slices we had as appetizers (chowpup kept asking if the food would be ready soon...) was DOM-delicious. I always enjoy watching and chatting with Dom as well. He really is a maestro.
So all in all it's been a good chow week so far.
