Last night we headed out to Port Credit before meeting some friends in Mississauga. We stumbled onto Lago restaurant -- doesn't seem to be affiliated with the Il Fornello/Lago chain downtown.
The atmosphere and decor in Lago was wonderful -- relaxing and very comfortable -- but this restaurant is such a local fave that they had no room for us and we were too hungry for the long wait for a table. So we headed into their adjacent bar, Shore 71, where they offer the same menu.
Shore 71 had a fun bar vibe with Latin music and cool decor. We sat at the bar to eat (they also had some tables scattered around) and appreciated the fact that the place was busy but not too packed or noisy for comfort -- we could hear each other talk. I started out with a martini from their long drink list that was out of this world, named Mango Madness. Watching the bartenders mix all the different martinis, I wished I could order one of each!
My DH started with oysters from their raw bar which he pronounced to be very fresh and delicious. Then he had a quatro formaggio pizza and I had a pasta named fiorellini primavera. The pizza was very good -- lots of cheese, including gorgonzola, but the sauce and crust still held up to all those cheese flavors. I thought the sauce was excellent. My pasta was outstanding. The fiorellini pasta was a very interesting flower shape that captured lots of sauce in the folds, with an extremely garlicky sauce and lots of chunky, crunchy veggies. Did I mention that the sauce had garlic? Of special note was a long, green vegetable that they shaved and included raw, giving the pasta a bit of crunch. It was so good, I wish I knew what that vegetable was.
Dinner for two including 2 drinks, 1/2 dozen raw oysters and 2 mains came out to just under $70. It was definitely worth it and we'll go back again if in the area (DH wants to try the 2 calamari appetizers). We thoroughly enjoyed the place; they got all the details just right. And the staff and service were wonderful as well.
