Four lady 'hounds walk into a bar...

And LOVE it! We paid our first visit to Highland Kitchen tonight and I think I speak for all of us when I say it was fantastic. As a resident of The 'Ville I am so very thrilled to have a place such as this nearby - a wonderful vibe, great food, friendly service, and reasonable prices. Clearly we are not the only ones who feel this way as the place was packed when we arrived at 7PM and just as bustling when we left a few hours later.

Two of us had a special drink made up of Bombay Sapphire, Lillet Blanc, blood orange bitters and a kumquat garnish. I don't remember what it was called but it was tasty.

For our apps we shared orders of chicken liver crostini and deviled eggs. I loved both and would get them again. Nothing crazy fancy about either just what you'd expect and well done.

For my main I had the pulled pork sandwich with fries. Patrick, our charming server, warned me that it was a little vinegary, and as I happen to love vinegar there was no problem. There was also a kick from some cayenne pepper. The pork was delicious but could have been a little more "pulled" - the chunks on the sandwich were more fork-n-knife rather than pick up and bite size. Did not detract from the taste though.

I'll let the other ladies chime in with their thoughts, but the other main dishes ordered were:

Braised pork on polenta (the star of the evening)
Cuban Reuben
Oyster Po'Boy

For dessert we sampled:
Chocolate Pudding
Flourless Chocolate cake with chocolate ice cream
Warm banana pudding with caramel sauce

Chocolate pudding won the most votes. But I think the cake was a close second.

I am really looking forward to another visit, perhaps for brunch, and do hope this place continues to do well. A much-needed addition to the menu.
