La Vecchia Cucina

A quick note to send some praise to the restaurant and staff of La Vecchia on Main Street in Santa Monica. I walked in (with my girlfriend)last Saturday evening (which was the President's Day holiday weekend) at around 7:45PM without a reservation and the entry staff made us feel welcome immediately and told us that they would do everything they could to get us a table by 8:00PM should there be some 'no shows'. By 8:05PM we were seated however we were not comfortable with the table we were given, so we asked to move to the bar. This makes us sound pretty ungrateful, haven been given a table w/o a res. and then getting choosey about it but the staff gave us no problem what-so-ever and completely made us at ease.
Well after that we had a great dinner and bottle of wine and I must say that for all we ate, the value is really there. I had the filet mignon which melted in my mouth. The chef took the time to tell me when I complimented him on it that he gets it from the same provisioner who supplies Sushi Roko with their tender kobi-like meat. The garlic laced olive oil to dip the bread in is fantastic because it is made from fresh garlic newly pressed for each serving. We also had the rigatoni bolagnese and I have to tell you that the pasta at La Vecchia particularly the meat sauce entrees are fantastic and if I only had one choice of entree, it would be this pasta. The calamari as a starter is great but not cooked this time as well as I would have it but good by any standard.
So in summary, I can't say enough good things about this place. It is a real class act, the way they handle you, the good service and food and all at very attractive prices.
They deserve this posting but I'm a little apprehensive that it will give them the idea to raise their prices. But I don't think so and these are really good people.
