La Palapa report

JulesEV | Jul 25, 2005 10:04 AM

An out-of-town friend & I ate at the E. Village La Palapa last night. Overall, I'd sum it up with an "eh." I'd been a year or so earlier, wasn't impressed then. But my friend was craving Mexican & I'd overloaded recently on Mercadito.

The friendly host seated us in the back after warning us the A/C wasn't working properly. But we were under a fan so the temperature was pleasant. The host set the tone for the service, which was friendly & efficient. The food came out quickly.

But the food itself just wasn't that exciting. We got their competent guacamole with oversalted chips, and I ordered 2 other appetizers -- the huitlacoche "crepas" and the catfish tamal. The fish in the latter was somewhat dry, not an enormous amount of flavor. The crepas -- which I expected to be more like French crepes I guess -- were layered in a terracotta dish & topped with cheese. Very rich. My friend had chicken enchiladas in a verde sauce, which I didn't taste. She said they weren't bad, but were overly salty.

Next time I'll happily overload on Mercadito.
