Having recently experienced the fine ambrosia known as mangosteen, I have developed a craving for the small, wonderfully sweet deep-crimson globes. It is so much, in fact, that I have scoured the bowels of the internet and have paid slightly exorbitant prices just to possess some form of the elusive fruit in my hands and, even better, on my palate. So, I propose that if you have found whole fresh (or frozen) mangosteen fruits, please post the name and address of the place where you have found them and, if possible, the price you paid. My reasoning, although admittedly somewhat selfish and not entirely altruistic, is as follows: First, by supporting the businesses that have had the foresight to provide southern California with our new favorite fruit, we are letting them know that mangosteens are indeed desired, and they will continue to get them. Second, the greater the demand, the more stores will carry them, and in turn, more people will take notice and will more likely spread the gospel and put an end to its current diasporic state. Eventually, maybe they can be so common that we could go to our local Ralph's or Vons or wherever and get them as we please for a nice, reasonable price. Until Oprah commands her legions to hunt for mangosteens, we are on our own, and this is our last bastion of hope! Let us start the mangosteen revolution!
