Two weeks ago, I took McDowell Blvd. south to get away from the congestion on 101. I noticed a couple of taco trucks parked next to Mervyn's parking lot, across from McDowell Park. I was drawn to the more colorfully decorated one, called La Oaxaquena, especially when I saw tlayudas as one of its offerings.
But I was too late. The tlayudas were already sold out, and I was encouraged to come back before 4pm to have a chance on getting one. Instead I ordered a sope with al pastor after checking that it would be made to order from fresh masa. The meat was tired, but everything else about it was very good. Queso fresco, zippy hot sauce, freshly chopped lettuce and onions, and most importantly, freshly griddled masa. I'd order this again but pick a different kind of meat.
The truck is here every afternoon, stationed on Maria Drive next to the baseball diamond at McDowell Park.
