This is a relatively new little gem in The Crossroads in Carmel. In the few months since they've been open they've been changing the lunch menu and the recipes for some of their pastries, but they started off excellent and they keep improving.
The lunch menu has been simplified from an overly ambitious set of selections to a few simple standards with daily specials added on. Today for lunch we had the White Bean and Ham Soup, followed by Ham and Cheese Crepes, both specials. The soup was very flavorful and the beans were well cooked but still firm. The crepe was excellent. A very delicious crepe with a nice filling of ham slices and melted cheese. It was accompanied with a spinach salad with a bit of a bite to it. The spinach was dressed with a raspberry vinegar and some pepper oil. It was a pleasant surprise. Two of the other specials were chicken breast with a fruit sauce and mashed potatoes and a salmon steak. Both of them looked very appealing.
For dessert we split a Cheesecake Brownie which was wonderful. This is one of the items he's changed. It used to be good, but now it's outstanding. The brownie is very gooey and rich with a vein of cheesecake in it and lots of walnuts. If it isn't the best brownie I've ever had it's a close second.
The bill for lunch, with our splitting the soup and brownie, and each getting a crepe was $14 that included one coffee.
On Friday and Saturday they have what is easily the best Challa I've ever had. Anyone who was at the Chowhound picnic in SF may remember the Coconut Cake and the Lemon Cake that came from there.
I highly recommend the place for a light lunch and wonderful pastries.
