Kuhn-Rikon Vase Grinder Review

DuffyH | Jun 2, 201506:14 AM

Recently disappointed to be once again chasing pepper across the kitchen while loading my beloved Unicorn Magnum pepper mill, I took heed of the recommendations of toddster and others and ordered the K-R Vase Grinder, in the Mini size. It is everything they said it was. I am completely satisfied. It is faster than I'd hoped, turning out enough pepper to finish a plate in just one or two grinds. Like the Magnum, loading it doesn't mess with the grind.

Other points in it's favor -

Easy to load. So easy. Unscrew the entire top, pour in pepper (salt, whatever), screw lid back on. The grind doesn't need adjusting, because I haven't touched it.

Easy to use. Turn it upside down and twist the black cap. Easy to grab and turn, it's big enough even on the mini to not be tiring.

Consistent grind. With less variation than my Magnum, I'm entirely happy. The only thing I'd like to see added is markings on the burr adjustment.

Size/looks. I bought the mini for finish use on my island, where we plate food. It's small enough to be a good fit on the dining table, too, and with rugged glass for daily use. Candlelight pretty it isn't, but if you like a contemporary functional look, this will do it. It holds a lot of pepper. I haven't refilled it yet and it's been almost 3 months of daily use.

I ended up being so happy with it that a few months later I ordered the white mini for my chunky sea salt. I had to pound the big rocks of Bonaire salt into small pebbles to work, but now it gives out a fine mist of salt. I also just pulled the trigger on the red standard size with interchangeable bottles for my whole spices. I really like these mills.

Thanks to all the 'Hounds who pointed me towards it. You rock.
