In the search for cheap eats, sometimes the case can be made that some foods are priced too low to make a quality product. That may have been the problem here.
The bun bo kho was $3.75. It looked ok, a bit shy of meat, but the red broth had no flavor at all. Zip, zero. Even salt and fish sauce additions didn't bring anything out except their own salty taste.
The taro flour cakes with egg (khoai) at $3.75 as well fared a bit better. They did taste vaguely like taro and had a meaty savoriness to them, and were satisfactory when dunked in the spicy dipping sauce.
