During our recent stay in Santa Cruz, we were based in Pleasure Point, not far from Verve Coffee. I had the chance to grab a cup there three times. While I’m glad I had a chance to try it, the Guatemalan and the Costa Rican French press didn’t sell me. The Guatemalan in particular seemed very thin or as my sister said, "Why bother?" I’m still voting for Blue Bottle and Ecco Caffe. More satisfying was the cappuccino here, so maybe the fuller flavor offered by the espresso beans are more to my liking.

However, another reason to drop by Verve is for the morning pastries from Kelly’s French Bakery. The morning bun, berry Danish, and apple in puff pastry (don’t know what it’s called) were quite credible and saved a trip to the other side of town.
I did squeeze in one visit to Kelly’s and can recommend the pumpkin pie highly. Very buttery and firm crust, dense custardy filling with just enough sweetness and spice, all topped with thick luscious whipped cream. I noticed slices of what looked like milk chocolate roulade in the case and was told they were buche de Noel. In October no less! If anyone tries the buche de Noel for Christmas, please do report back. And a friend brought a sweet French baguette from Kelly’s as part of the cheese course and I was impressed by the flavor development and texture of the bread.
