It's a little thing, but it bugs me: For convenience sake, my wife and I usually buy the pre-bagged lettuce. But we (especially she) are not big lettuce eaters, so we don't finish it all immediately. I mostly use lettuce on sandwiches I take to work and for a simple salad two or three nights a week.
Often, even BEFORE the expiration date, or sell-by date, the lettuce will have begun turning brown and slimy due to moisture in the bag. Sometimes it's even happened *before* I've opened the bag, if it's been in my refrigerator for a few days. It's disgusting at that point, so I end up throwing away half a bag of lettuce.
Any way to extend the lifespan? I snickered a few months ago when my wife bought a head of lettuce rather then the bagged kind, but I noticed that it actually lasted longer in the fridge. (Maybe I've answered my own question....)
