Next door to the original Shin-Sen-Gumi Yakitori in the same Gardena strip mall is Kansha Creamery. It offers handcranked Japanese-style shave ice flavored with a featured syrup homemade of local ingredients, Stumptown coffee, and organic ice cream. Straus Creamery supplies the base for the homemade ice cream. Only about five ice cream flavors at a time, spun daily, making it easier to decide. It has a cozy seating area if you want to eat in.
My friend's white peach shave ice looked marvelous for a light ending to a day of chowing. For me, Honest Abe (chococolate chips and olive oil) below and Cinnabacon on top, $5.50. A little over spun, but otherwise, dense and creamy with well-balanced sweetness.
We chatted with one of the owners a bit. She said that her brother is the ice cream genius and they saw a dessert void in the neighborhood to fill. Kansha donates 50¢ of every item sold and all tips to charity. In the past 18 months, raising $67K since February 2015, a remarkable feat!
