Walked by looking for the new "taqueria" - El Chucho - that is supposed to have opened this week on 11th St this afternoon looking for a late lunch (the taqueria is supposedly open next week), and then up the street for Maple (another new place I had been meaning to check out), but came across a sign saying "KBC", and I recalled reading about something recently in DC Eater with those initials and remembered wanting to go there. Good thing I did. Turned out it was Kangaroo Boxing Club (opened by the people who ran the PORC truck, which I hadn't been to).
The space is small, a bar on one half and the other half with limited seating (but a bit more than Room 11). They have a number of different handmade BBQ sauces on the table (which I appreciate when BBQ places do that), of which I liked the Hot (though it wasn't spicy at all) and the Sweet Spicy best. Vegan was awful (no, I'm not a vegan, but I was curious). I ordered the Three Little Pigs (pulled pork, virginia ham and bacon) with mac n cheese and my gf ordered the pulled chicken with collard greens. The pulled pork was good, better than The Standard's (though not nearly as good as the chopped pork at the mobile BBQ truck at the Shell station in Sterling on VA-7 - can't recall the name), and the ham and bacon just put it over the top in porkyness. The bun was a good complement not soft and doughy, and not hard - almost perfect for a pulled pork sandwich. The mac n cheese (I got it w/ bacon) was very rich and pretty good, but it was pretty runny. My gf's pulled chicken sandwich was very good too; it came with a chocolate bbq sauce - almost like a mole. The greens were good too, maybe a tad too vinegar-ey and "wet", but still good.
We didn't drink, though it looks like they have a good drink menu (?), and our total was $22, and completely filled us up, which is cheap for DC. Very happy to have it close by and will definitely be back often.
