Jfood visits Scottsdale - Canal Review

The Jfoods spent a wonderful day at Taliesin West and the Scottsdale Art Show before heading to Canal for lunch. This is a neat spot on the second floor of Stetson overlooking the canal.

For lunch Jfood ordered the Sweet corn cakes. Two nicely fried corn cakes laced with corn and topped with a little guac. This was a great appetizer fro Jfood to share with Mrs. Jfood. Jfood would rate these an 8.

For the real lunch Jfood ordered the triple Greyson Burgers (he has no idea who Greyson is). The three burgers that comprise the trio include (1) a Tuna burger, (2) a traditional beef burger with Boursin, mushrooms and bibb lettuce and (3) and chicken burger with pesto. Since Jfood is allergic to nuts, the pesto chicken was replaced with a second beef, aw shucks. These were great little nuggets with the only downside was the second burger was a little too salty. Jfood would rate these a 9.

The Jfoods liked the restaurant so much they decided to return for dinner. This is quite a place on a Saturday night. The crowd was very eclectic. Half were over 50, mainly in their 60’s and the other half were in their early 20’s. The latter had an additional subset. The ladies were dressed to the nines and the guys were in jeans and t-shirts. It had a great vibe for a fun time on a Saturday night. The restaurant has a great design and the tabkes were far enough apart for conversation.

Jfood ordered the Duck Confit Tostado for an appetizer and the Mahi mahi with fingerling potato and bacon hash for an entrée. The duck was a great combination of flavors and textures. As in the other dishes, the chef focused on vertical presentations, not the architectural giants of five years ago but as you moved into the dish from the top you opened up different flavors and textures. The tostado had the crunchiness embedded under the layer of perfectly cooked duck and guac. It was a very nice dish. Jfood would rate this an 8.

The entrée of Mahi Mahi placed over the potato and bacon hash was very good but not great. For some reason there was something missing to give it that extra zip (Jfood wants to say Pernod but it would not fit into the theme). Jfood would also rate this an 8.

Dessert was a total disappointment. The S’mores Chocolate Crème Brulee was only have eaten. The sugar crust was cold, the crème was too sweet and the graham cracker crust was hard as a rock. Just discard and try again. Jfood would rate this a 1.

The server was very friendly and very good at handling BOH issues. It took four tries to receive bread, and finally arrived after their appetizers were finished, and the tea arrived after the dessert was finished. And when the tea arrived it was basically blech water. Do not order the tea either.

There are several BOH issues that the FOH needs to cover for, but the food is excellent and definitely worth the visit. So stick with the apps and entrees and go down Scottsdale Road for dessert.
