Jake's In Milwaukee

Mel | Feb 2, 2005 04:36 PM

I was downtown yesterday, and had a chance to have lunch at Jake's (17th and North Ave). Had the corned beef sandwich, homemade pickle, and a cream soda. Wonderful sandwich, great pickle. They have a picture of Bud Selig (Comis of baseball - a Milwaukee native and a frequent customer) behind the counter, with the message "this is the only Bud we serve", along with a few Miller (Milwaukee) beer logos. White people think that Jake's is located in a bad area (mostly black), but I have never had a problem there - and I have never had a problem in the, as they call it here the "core", and I used to work down there all the time. I used to live in Chicago and DC, and I really have a problem with Milwaukee whites that are afraid to go into the "core" to get great food. Speed Queen BBQ and Jake's are both in the "core", and they both have just great food. Last week, I had lunch at the Coney Island, on the South Side at 6th and National (used to be a Polish area, but is now Hispanic, so some foolish whites stay away - try to get the owner to open up about all the pro jocks, judges, business giants that used to visit) great dogs.
