Indian Oven at the 24/7 Travel Plaza, Bakersfield

List: I'm sure that I have posted about this place before, but can't seem to find it on several searches....so I thought an update was in order. This is an Indian restaurant attached to a truck stop on the outskirts of Bakersfield...its just off the highway (98?) that cuts off from Bakersfield to Barstow (through Tehachapi pass...)...on the road to Lake Isabella. (About a block off the freeway on the right hand side).

Its a great place to stop for lunch should your travels take you between Las Vegas and the Central Valley (as mine often do...). The food is good and cheap, restrooms are decent, and the gas (the type you put in your car) is often a good 10 cents cheaper than anywhere else in the valley. Memorial Day we stopped there: DH had the samosas with chana masala for 3.99. Its listed as an appetizer but is a HUGE serving that was more than enough for his lunch. Delicious, with yogurt and tamarind sauces. I had something they call a "kabob wrap." It came wrapped in foil looking for all the world like a Mission-style burrito (it wouldn't surprise me if there is a Mexican cook back there somewhere who decided on that particular twist). But no rice or cheese (the parts of burritos I don't like...). Rather a generous serving of lamb kabob wrapped in a large nan with onion, lettuce, tomatoes, and a bit of that yogurt sauce. It was delicious! Lunch for two, including two cups of very strong chai that powered us all the way home to Vegas and a generous tip was 20 dollars. I say check it out!
