Il Pastaio -- Always Solid

One of the Celestino Drago offshoots, Il Pastaio is always consistently good. Kind of a Beverly Hills neighborhood place, it seems full almost every week day at lunch and most week nights and weekends at dinner. Just had an excellent roasted tomato and garlic soup followed by very good mezzalune -- pasta crescents stuffed with lobster and zuchinni in a light lobster sauce. Good flavor on the lobster, and not tough -- that alone is an accomplishment. My wife had a terrific asparagus soup -- strong but smooth flavor -- and the very good pumpkin ravioli in pumpkin sage sauce. Nothing terribly fancy or complex, but everything well executed and flavorful. The place is a bit tight -- very New York City vibe -- tables close, bar packed even at 6 PM, but the food is excellent, the service good, and the overall value pretty high. (Dinner for two as described above, with a cocktail, a glass of decent wine, a lemoncello, plus 20% tip -- $94.) One of those local places that you tend to forget how good they are, until you drop in and realize that everyone and their brother remembers how good it is and has decided to have dinner that night.
