Houston Report

Hi all,

Just got back from a four day trip to Houston. I had asked for some recommendations here on this board, and so I'd like to share how things went. Here are a few of the highlights:

Breakfast Klub: Great, warm atmosphere, and wonderful people watching. The grits and biscuits are superb, as are the wings. The catfish was only OK, and the rest of the breakfast stuff just fine, as you'd expect. Bottomless coffee in big mugs, the three coffee choices, as well as the awesome environment make this hightly recommended and worth the wait (we didn't have a wait on weekday mornings though).

Crescent City Beignets: The real deal for these delicious treats, and really fine cafe au lait. If this is what you're looking for CCB delivers!

Goode Co. BBQ: I didn't go, but my BBQ aficianado friends were somewhat disappointed with the quality of the brisket and the ribs.

Goode Co. Seafood: Now this is another story. Possibly the best meal of all during our stay. Amazing seafood! Our table tried a little of everything, and it all delivered: crawfish, boudin, gumbo, seafood pies, everything. Run, don't walk, here if you're in the mood for awesome seafood in a pleasant informal environment.

Pappas Bros. Steakhouse: I liked my steak a lot, but my wife is now getting into organic only beef, so she went with the tuna and was quite disappointed with a bit of fishy taste to the tuna steak she ordered. Also, the wine list is large, but really overpriced. But my steak was really very very fine. If you want a great steak, I'd suggest you bring your own bottle of wine, unless you mind paying major markup prices. BTW, service here is absolutely top-notch.

Spanish Village: Mexican retaurant near museum district. Highly recommmended for its food, although the beer could have been a bit colder. Margaritas were excellent. Very good fajitas, chips, and tortillas.

Brennan's of Houston: Went to a reception here, but got a sample of how very special this palce is. I couldn't imagine anyone being disappointed with this restaurant, if you're looking for someplace special. I'm not much of a dessert guy, but the bananas foster is truly one of the greatest and most memorable dishes I've experienced in a long while.

Hope this helps. Keep up the great work, chowhounds!
