Houston BBQ

I'm a dedicated gourmet of bar-b-que. Having eaten for over 40 years at Elgin's Southside BBQ (current location) and downtown Elgin. My wife and I spent several days over the 4th of July holiday hitting the great pits in Luling, Lockhart, San Marcus, Elgin, Austin, Llano, and Taylor.

My favorite? By far is Muellers in Taylor. Excellent brisket and ribs. Best sausage? Used to Elgin hot sausage at Southside. But as others have noted, the barbeque at Southside has fallen in quality over the past 5 - 10 years. (Their downtown Elgin location had excellent Q.) Now, the best sausage is Smitty's in Lockhart.

In Houston, I've tried Luling City Market, Thelma's, the barbeque joints on Almeda (Green's when Mr. Green owned it), and a few others in Houston. Not particularly overwhelmed thus far however by Houston barbeque. The consistency isn't there. I did have some of Thelma's a year or two ago that was really good. Not since however. BTW, I don't care for Goode's. Not up to my standard of really good barbeque.

What do the barbeque aficionados recommend? I've heard about a place in Manvel and a guy selling it from his truck in Dickinson. I don't seem able to find the Dickison guy however. We'll try any that comes highly recommended.

An insightful person noted here that the quality of the barbeque depends on the pit master. And, when the food is bad on ocassion it only indicates tht everyone can have an off-day.

Which places in Houston have consistently good to excellent barbeque.
