Hot??? Food

I really enjoy spicy food, not to the point of pain, but I definitely like feeling a burn.

For my graduation from Junior High School, we went to Szechuan Taste, on Chatham Square in NYC, one of the first Szechwan restaurants there. I ordered eggplant with garlic sauce, and I still remember the wonderful explosion in my mouth.

When I go to a Thai restaurant and order things 'hot' I usually feel the heat, but less and less frequently at Chinese restaurants.

Last night I made Thai basil chicken, which called for 3 fresh red chiles. I used 3 Thai bird chiles, minced. I tasted them as I was chopping them, and they were hot. However, in the finished dish, I felt no heat at all.

Earlier this summer I made a watermelon salad with 1 large fresh jalapeno, minced. Again I felt no heat, although a friend who tasted it said "wow, you can really taste the chile".

Have I burned out my heat sensing tastebuds?
