First a caveat - I am not a connoisseur of BBQ. In fact it's pretty rare that I even enjoy it enough to tell someone about it... today's different.

A friend of mine who lives in SE Portland insists that everytime we go out to lunch that we get BBQ. I usually agree because he's good company and we've been friends for 20 years. He's taken me to a few places around town that, from my perspective, have been forgettable (sorry Robert). He's been raving about a place called Hog Wild on 82nd for the last few months that he wanted to take me to, but I wasn't holding out too much hope that it would be any different than the past.

Well, we went there today for lunch and I had the brisket sandwich - best I've ever had (in Portland) by far!!! I did live in Dallas for a few years in the mid-90's and it's at least as good as any I had there. The brisket had an excellent smoke ring, was very moist, had lot's of "crispy bits" on the outside, the fat layer hadn't been completly rendered off and provided a great mouth feel to the experience. The sauce was great (mild, medium and hot) - it had enough thickness to cling to the meat, it was very well balanced between the sweet, "sour" and savory.

I talked with the owner, a Kevin Collins, who was there on his lunch break from Precision Castparts just down the street... he's been catering for 7 years in his off hours and has had this place for a year or so. Many of you have probably been there before, but if not give it a try and let me know your thoughts. I'd like to hear what some of you who know your BBQ really think of it.
