New High-tech Ba Le

Paul Tyksins | Apr 20, 2003 09:24 AM

The virtues of Ba Le Vietnamese Sandwich Shop and Bakery have been extolled here many times in the past.

Ba Le's got a new look. The food is as exceptional as ever.

They knocked out a wall and three flat-screen computer screens have been placed on the ceiling above the register. The screens advertise Ba Le's sandwiches. (Very quirky touch--especially so since the screens are unevenly placed and seemed to have been hastily installed.)

A series of connected tables makes a 15-foot island of thai snacks in the middle of the room (rice noodle salads, banana in sticky rice, etc. etc.).

A huge bin accessible to the customer contains hundreds of Ba Le's mini-baguettes (3 for 99 cents) hot from the oven.

I wolfed a #13 vegetarian and a #7 pork with pate and finished with a taro root and coconut milk dessert/drink.

The old woman who barks the sandwiches to the back remains.

Buy 5 sandwiches and get the 6th free.
