I had read a few glowing reports on here about Hickory BBQ, the newish place on route 28 west of Kingston, NY.
So I guess my expecations were a bit high. And boy were they dashed. Had the 3-sandwich sampler: beef, pork and turkey. I could hardly distinguish between them as they all suffered from an oversweet barbecue sauce (why do people think barbecue should be a dessert!) I couldn't really detect any smoky flavor, either. Blech.
The much-talked-about onion rings were nothing special at all. The collard greens were insanely salty - practically inedible. And the pecan pie had an unusually strong molasses flavor, which sort of ruined it for me.
The only really good thing was the roasted potato salad, which was quite tasty.
So I'm still, still hunting for some good barbecue upstate. I think I'll just have to cook it for myself!
