Ever heard of a sponge with no flour? Bread baking...

I'm trying a new recipe for ciabatta bread and the sponge is 1 16th of a teaspoon of yeast and 2 cups of water. Let sit for 4 hours then put in fridge overnight.

I've read a lot of bread recipes in my time and have never come across this. Have any of you?
