I'm a Scelfo fangrrrl, it's true. I loved his food at North Street, I followed him like a puppy to Temple Bar, and have been swooning over the deep fried poached chip-in egg at Russell House Tavern for a while now. But last night I had a small plate that blew me AWAY. He's running it as a special tonight, so if you don't have other plans, get on over there to try it.
Fiore de latte burrata with walnuts and fried shallots (onions?). ZOMG ... I know I know it sounds so simple, and it is. But it's the kind of thing that comes together perfectly, with the gooey middle of the cheese running around your palate and the light drizzle of olive oil adding a peppery punch, and the walnuts providing a little crunch. Really really swoony good.
We also enjoyed the foie gras terrine that is flavored (quite assertively) with laphroaig whiskey. If you like smokey peaty whisky flavors, you will love this dish. It is not for the faint of heart however.
There is also a white anchovy toast with marcona almonds that is new and lovely if you like the assertiveness of boquerones.
We also shared the beef heart ravioli which was BOLD and beefy, as it should be. The scelfster isn't' holding back on his flavors, and I like it.
I love to eat small plates style, and this chef continues to deliver. You don't need to be a member of the fanclub to enjoy this food, but I'm about to start making up t-shirts. Some pictures below for your enjoyment. (burrata, egg, ravs)
