Hi Hounds ~
So! After 18 years of living in California, I'm finally going to take my first trip up to Monterey (and Salinas, Carmel, & Big Sur) next week. Very excited!
But Before I depart, I must first make a list of reliable dining options.. and so I turn to you, my dear Hounds..
First off: the drive there.
I see that MapQuest has me taking the 5 North for hundreds of miles.. Are there a any quick and cheap must-eats along the way? I'm really (REALLY) bad with geography (I have NO sense of direction). Is Andersen's Split Pea place on the way up there? No idea. I've never eaten there.. but I know it's become something of an institution..
Next up: Monterey
Any surefire winners? Meaning, if you had but ONE place to dine in Monterey, where would it be?
As for Big Sur, I've read in a few guidebooks that there's some rustic restaurant I'm supposed to eat at.. can't recall the name.. but it appears in just about every tour book.. and it seems charming enough.. but I wonder about the food.
Any reccs for local treasures would be greatly appreciated..
Oh, I should mention that I'm in the mood for scallops.. so if you know of a great place with killer scallops.. do tell!
Thanks in advance for any and all help!
ps - also, any great ice-cream parlors up that way? I'm always on the lookout for great ice-cream..
