Living in between Keene, NH and Brattleboro, VT, a new restaurant opening is very exciting. So it was surprising that somehow, I missed the opening of Hazel Pizza (http://www.hazelpizza.com/#!menu/c218... Brattleboro late last summer. Just tried it for the first time last night. It far, far exceeded my expectations. I have continuously been disappointed in pizza options in this area- as much as I really, really want to like Fireworks, they just don't do credit to their beautiful pizza ovens. Hazel, on the other hand, has pizza that would be legitimately good anywhere. It's real thin crust pizza, with buffalo mozzarella (I know of nowhere else in this area using buffalo mozz). Sauce is applied in appropriate quantities, crust is well blistered and has good flavor. Really was just a great surprise to find it.
They also have a long list of sandwiches and BBQ meat plates- they are smoking all their own meats on site. My North Carolinian husband tried their smoked turkey special and was impressed enough that the pulled pork sandwich is next on his list. Homemade BBQ sauces on the table were tasty, though it was hard to tell the difference between the one labeled "sweet" vs. the bottle of "spicy." Fries that came with the sandwich were good too.
Their beer list is a surprising disappointment- I would have expected a much more creative and less mainstream selection. They have lots of cocktails though if that's your thing.
All in all, this little place definitely worth a visit if you're in Brattleboro. It was full at 7pm on a Thursday night, but the waitstaff were very friendly and attentive and food came out quick enough. So happy to have this as a local option, I predict this will become part of the weekly rotation and the menu looks interesting and diverse enough that it won't get boring like some of the other local places.
