Harvey's Guss Meat Company, trip report

Twofer | Oct 25, 2002 06:46 PM

The Carnivore came home from work Thursday, a glint in his eye, a spring in his step. Ah-ha! I thought - this can only mean a new chow adventure! My beloved did not disappoint. He had called Harvey's Guss to order meat. Thanks to the hounds he has been pondering all things meat, fire and smoke for the last week, and at last had sprung to action! As I work from home, and they close at 1pm, I was assigned the Friday morning role of meat retriever. My almost vegetarian soul was timid about the job, but last weekends tri-tip was awfully good, so I played along. (Besides, the dog & cat would be thrilled!) I wandered the cattywumpas streets looking for the place. Parking the dog in a dubious loading zone, I pushed the buzzer and was admitted to an immaculate cement cave. Harvey himself welcomed me into his tiny office, and we had a fine chat about life, the meat business and art. He was a little disappointed when it became clear that I didn't know meat, but, reassured that the Carnivore had ordered well, he let me take home a very large and actually quite beautiful bag of raw meat. The dog didn't take his eyes off it the whole way home.Stay tuned for the next exciting installment! The cooking! The vegetable lover
