Happy New Years at Tempo

Paul Mollica | Jan 1, 2004 01:26 AM

Tempo Cafe on Chestnut proved the midway point between destination one for New Year's Eve (my spouse's 5K race in Lincoln Park) and destination two (a last-of-the-year screening of "LOTR: The Return of the King" in Streeterville). Neither my wife nor I could remember eating there in ten years or more, certainly not since they moved into the current location.

At 7 pm the place was pretty deserted, with maybe five tables full. Service was cheerful and quick. My two sons had their coffee shop standards (a cheeseburger for the youngest, hot turkey sandwich for the elder), and my spouse and I did a couple of different omlettes. While the meal was not ideal in all of the particulars (for instance, the potatoes tasted of old oil), the eggs were sublime: souffle-like, hot, buttery and with a bit of a crust (yet not overdone). Coffee was good as well We don't find ourselves in this neighborhood much, but I would continue to recommend this place for the eggs alone. (I understand that the pancakes and juice are really good also, but I've never tried them.)
