Last week I had a chance to try happy hour at Tarpy's Roadhouse with a colleague after a meeting downtown. It used to be a regular lunch stop, but a few years have passed since the last visit. I'm pleased to say that Tarpy's still delivers on food, drink and service even at happy hour.
We shared an order of sweet potato fries with BBQ rosemary aioli, $5, and popcorn prawns with crispy okra and harissa jam, $9. Both were terrific and the harissa jam was especially interesting as a condiment with medium chile heat moderated by some sweetness.
Cocktails on the short HH list were only $6. What a nice deal in the new world of $12 and even $15 cocktails. My Roadhouse Mule was very good with bits of fresh ginger root, squeeze of lime, habanero simple syrup and the usual Bunderberg ginger beer and vodka. Full strength too, and not watered down. My colleague was happy with her Creamsicle cocktail.
Sitting on the patio under the shade of the umbrellas was so pleasant on a hot afternoon. We were buzzed a few times by small planes coming in to land at MRY airport, so be prepared for the roar.
I did ask about the Locals menu, and it is no more. https://www.chowhound.com/post/recess... But you can still get a good deal on the Tarpy's experience at happy hour, Monday through Friday, 3pm to 6pm.
