Hamlet Bistro

Went with a friend to Hamlet Bistro in Mount Airy last night. I really wanted to like this place as I like Mount Airy and I'm always looking for a good place that won't require a trip to center city. The atmosphere is very nice: bright colors, original artwork (there are photos on their website: The prices are reasonable. Entress at around $17, and it's byob. The good stuff ends there. They may just be experiencing growing pains but we experienced some very inept service. While our waitress was nice, she took quite a while to open our wine and never did bring the bread she'd offered until, 10 minutes later, we reminded her. We were lucky, however, as I noticed the people at the next table were halfway through their entrees when she came over and opened their wine. I ordered two appetizers instead of an entree (two of the same appetizer). It was presented to me on two separate plates instead of one. Since the table was tiny, this wasn't going to work. The waitress (someone other than our main waitress)went back to the kitchen and brought it back on one plate. I had the shrimp and scallop dumpling which was pretty good. My friend had the crab and asparagus with bowtie pasta. He said it was just okay and bland. He mentioned that there was very little crab but at $17 he couldn't complain. The place was packed, and I wish them well but I don't think the food makes up for the other problems at this point.
