Hal Mae Geeb

Stan | Sep 10, 200407:31 PM

I went to Hal Mae Geeb (3122 W 8th St, 213 385 0655), which is the place that someone here identified as "Grandma's" just a couple doors down from Mom's in Koreatown. Grandma's isn't as scary as Mom's -- no chattering TV, no screeching fan, wall menu translated into English (sort of), and less wet dog smell (though they do have a few flies). And they have even more cool photos of the various dishes on the wall. But the big difference is that the food here is good. I got the spicy chicken stew. The panchan were good not great, but there was also a beef and seaweed soup that I thought was quite good. The stew itself was quite good as well, certainly better than the (perfectly good) version in the food court at Koreatown Plaza. The wet dog thing will probably prevent me from making Grandma's into a major dinner destination, but I still more or less liked it.
