Gutierrez Drive-In, Salinas

La Fogata (232 Main St, Salinas; 831-757-5690) and Gutierrez Drive-In (61
Sherwood Dr, Salinas; 831-424-8382) are my favorite Mexican restaurants in town.
Gutierrez (on East Rossi Road behind the Confucius church) specializes in

Mom got the enchilada de mariscos plate with the side of salad, rice and beans
to share with Dad ($6). Two enchiladas stuffed with crab, shrimp and octopus
were topped with red sauce, melted cheese and avocado slices. Dad had a burrito
de mariscos ($3.50). This was filled with the same seafood mixture, only the
straight stuff unadulterated by rice or beans. William ate the small size menudo
($4.50) which had a greaseless, citrusy broth and good quality honeycomb tripe
with just the right resistance to the bite. I ordered caldo de siete mares ($10)
which was brimming with two kinds of shrimp, rock fish, tender octopus, buttery
squid, and a Dungeness crab claw in a tomatoey stock. The addition of some fresh
cilantro and a couple spoonfuls of pico de gallo added the right touch of savory
and piquancy.
