Thanks to a heads up from “j mather” that Guanatos Ice Cream had opened in Walnut Creek, I’d been looking for a chance to check out the new spot.
Then word of a new restaurant, Sichuan House, in the same shopping center sealed the deal.
This turned out to be a great one-two punch, cooling down with Mexican-style ice cream after a fiery chile-laden Sichuan lunch. The Walnut Creek location has a couple tables on the sidewalk and some seating inside, unlike the Bay Point original. The signage is entirely in English with the Mexican flavors fully translated. Paletas are designated as Fruit Bars ($1.75), Cream Bars ($2.00), and Premium Bars ($2.50).
I had a sample of the Milk Caramel (cajeta) ice cream, as good as I remember from a stop in Bay Point, and wound up buying a Pistachio premium bar, shown here,
The pistachio paleta was good, but not as much of a knock-out as other flavors I’ve tried from Guanatos. Guanatos has been running neck-and-neck with Frozen Art for best paletas and this one was not going to put it over the top. That just means I need to come back for more tasting trials, and I’m sure that I will.
