The professional conference I go to every year is at the Manchester Grand Hyatt this April, and because I live locally (La Mesa), I get the pleasure of scheduling a group event for my fellow geeks from grad school.
Personally, I'd like to take over Cafe Chloe, but because the group includes some poor grad students and marginally poor academics, we need to keep the prices low ($30-40/head, including heavy appetizers and at least 2 drinks). But I refuse to throw everyone into a spot where we get fried mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers, and Bud Lite. So I sleuthed out the Proper Gastropub/Wine Steals near PetCo park - which I think will fit the bill: close enough to not be totally inconvenient, yet interesting enough food/wine to make these mostly East Coasters feel like they're not in New England anymore.
What I'm wondering is: has anyone experienced their rooftop sports deck? During a game or not during a game? Any other input on experiences here I should know about?
I did search the board for group dinner/private dining in the nearby Gaslamp, but didn't find anything that blew my skirt up... but I haven't signed on the dotted line with Proper/WS, so if there's something you think that would be a better fit, I'm open.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this!
