Green Walnuts

rien | Jun 21, 200406:14 PM

Tis the season for green walnuts. I want to make walnut liquer (nocino), walnut wine (vin de noix), and green walnut preserves (don't know the name of that one off the top of my head - saw a recipe in Claudia Roden's Middle Eastern cookbook).

I've found sources in California, but does anyone know if there's a store or Farmers Market in the Chicago area where I can buy them or make a request for them? Obviously, they don't grow locally, but I'd feel a bit more comfortable if I could go pick them up rather than having them shipped. I'm looking for a decent quantity - maybe 5/10 pounds. Prices I've seen are around $4 a pound plus shipping for organic.

Many thanks,
