Green Field Churrascaria - Long Beach

Back in April of this year, I posted to inquire of any Chow experience at Green Field Churrascaria in Long Beach. No one had a review to offer and suggested that I could be our first guinea pig.

Well, this past Friday I stepped to the plate (well, may plates in this case)!

Be patient with me. I am an accomplished Chow and an accomplished Writer, but this is the first time melding these talents in review form at this site.

A fantastic part of the evening was getting three non-chows to venture out of their dietary comfort zones to eat with me. I laud their adventurous spirit and their enjoyment of the food.

The meal is $21.95/person on the weekend. Drinks and dessert are extra. The base gets all you can eat Brazilian BBQ served at the tableside and as many trips as you like to the buffet steamtables. Onto the review ...

We waited with anticipation for each server to bring by another meat for savoring. By our count, we were presented with at least 15 meats during our 2 1/2hr seating. That was more than sufficient to choose some favorites and repeat those eats!

For my money, the rib eye steak, pork loin, lamb, duck and quail were worth the price of admission. The rib-eye was down right sensual; a perfect combination of seared exterior and medium rare center. Butter doesn't melt this good. The lamb was fragrant and tender. The duck was well-seasoned, but not too salty.

Meats that turned us off: the rabbit was very salty; the garlic steak was overcooked; the tri-tip was tough; and the sausage was too greasy.

The buffet section was a bit Americanized with salads and pasta. The best bet was to stick with the black beans and rice, fried bananas (not plantains, unfortunately), oxtail stew, and marinated vegetables. The oxtail stew was piping hot and a fanciful blend of lentils, seasoning, and vegetables.

My overall review: better than other Churrascaria I've had, especially the quality of meats and selection. The buffet section lacks creativity and misses on the chance to highlight authentic Brazilian food. It's a meat-eater's paradise and the price fits.
