The Great Huckleberry Quest

alight | Aug 25, 200202:29 PM

Growing up around here, we had what were called huckleberry bushes in the yard; the bush looked a little like a blueberry bush, but the berries were smaller and bright red. At their ripest, they were still nicely tart. Up in the mountains, (and, I understand, alll along the north side of the US) there are larger, sweeter, blueberries also called huckleberries, that usually show up when people bake pies or jelly. I don't like them nearly as much as the little tart red ones.
First- what's up with the name? Are they both related? Anyone have a different name for either of them? Second-has anyone ever seen the red ones for sale anyplace, or know anyone that sells red huckleberry jelly?
